There is something about water that seems to hold our worries for a while. We spent a slow weekend by a lake — no itinerary, no hurry — and the quiet was not empty. It was full.

Six in the morning, and the lake is still.

The long mornings

We woke early without trying. Mist sat on the water like a held breath. I took too many photographs of the same view, hoping one of them might keep the feeling.

What resetting really means

Resetting is not switching off. It is changing the channel — from the loud, crowded one to the one where you can hear yourself think. Water does that for me.

“In every outthrust headland, in every curving beach, in every grain of sand there is the story of the earth.” — Rachel Carson

We came home lighter. The photographs remind me that quiet is always available — sometimes we just need to travel a little to remember where to find it.
